The system of education provides good quality and is well developed. One of the most important tasks for central and local authorities is to give equal possibilities in getting a top quality education for all citizens of Ukraine.

7% of Ukrainian professionals who teach 11 million students (22% of the population)  are involved in the area of education and upbringing.

There are 18400 institutions for pre-school preparation. According to the Constitution secondary school takes the central part in the system and is free and quite accessible. 7 mln. students attend 21900 schools. The private sector in secondary education is insignificant. Totally, there are 200 private schools (1% of all the amount of students).

The transition of secondary school from 10 (11) to 12 level system, according to European standards, is taking place now. Moreover, there is no difference in the content of Ukrainian (post-soviet) secondary education from standards of the secondary school of other European countries.

You can take vocational education in 1003 technical institutions on the base of lower secondary education and upper secondary education. In the Ukrainian system of Education College of Further Education refers to the lower part of higher education.

Higher Education

Higher education is the level of education acquired by a person in a higher education institution as a result of a consistent, systematic and purposeful process of mastering the content of training, which is based on a complete general secondary education and ends with obtaining a certain qualification based on the results of state certification.

Higher education is carried out on the basis of a complete general secondary education. In higher education institutions that train junior specialists, persons with basic general education can be accepted.

Structure

Higher education institutions are technical school (college), college, institute, conservatory, academy, university, and others.

There are four levels of accreditation for higher education institutions:

  • The first level is a technical school, college, other institutions of higher education equivalent to them;
  • The second level — college, other institutions of higher education equal to it;
  • The third and fourth levels (depending on the consequences of accreditation) — conservatory, academy, institute, university.

Educational levels:

  • initial level (short cycle) of higher education;
  • first (bachelor) level;
  • second (master) level;
  • the third (educational, scientific/educational, creative) level;

Educational qualification levels:

  • junior bachelor;
  • bachelor;
  • master.

International Students

International students get their higher education in universities, academies and institutes that are not only accredited but also have a special license to teach foreign students. All the universities from this Guide possess the license. The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine controls the quality of educational services done to foreign students.

International students start studying with a foundation year.

It includes a course of Ukrainian (Russian) language and some of the comprehensive subjects according to the future profession. Further education is continuing together with Ukrainian students. ( English medium is also available, however).

Student life in Ukraine does not differ a lot from that in other European countries. Students study, meet new people, hang out, learn new things, travel around Europe, etc. Most students live on campus (some rent apartments). Hostel fee usually doesn`t go higher than USD 50 per month. Campuses have all the facilities for safe and comfort stay: libraries, hospitals, gyms, conference and concert halls, laboratories and other training facilities, security, etc.

Universities provide students with books and relevant studying materials. Libraries with computer rooms are also available. Almost every university has sports teams, which compete in various disciplines with their peers from other institutions. The most popular sport is no doubt football. Many students are also involved in KVN games (a humorous contest between faculties, universities). Participating in this kind of activity usually takes a lot of time, but if your team performs well, the university administration will offer you some flexibility in attendance.
